How Often Should Your Pet See a Veterinarian?

Dog wellness exams provide your vet with the opportunity to monitor your pet's health, check for early signs of disease, and provide preventive treatments to help protect your pet against potentially life-threatening conditions. Today, our South Plainfield vets explain how routine exams help to keep your pet well.

My dog is healthy. Why do they need to have a checkup?

Preventive care is about maintaining your dog's good health and providing the care they need to give them their best possible chance at living a long and healthy life. Preventive care for pets starts with routine wellness exams either annually or twice yearly depending on the needs of your pup.

These routine exams are vet checkups for your four-legged friend. By bringing your pooch in to see the vet, even when they seem perfectly healthy, you give your veterinarian an opportunity to monitor your pet's health, check for the earliest signs of diseases, and provide preventive care such as vaccines and parasite prevention to keep your dog and feeling they're very best.

Spotting health issues such as parasites, ear infections, or gastrointestinal issues early, before obvious symptoms appear, means that treatment can begin early when it is most effective.

How often should my pet have a checkup?

Each pet is different and has different needs - especially as they age. This is why your dog's vet visit schedule will depend on their age and medical history. At Plainfield Animal Hospital in South Plainfield our vets will put together a dog wellness plan to address all of your dog's unique preventive care needs.

Puppies and kittens can be susceptible to health conditions that are easily resisted by adult pets. This is likewise true for senior or geriatric pets. You should bring your puppy/kitten in for a checkup much more frequently to give them the very best start in life, (every month for puppies and kittens under a year old). For geriatric pets, twice a year or more if needed is recommended.

What is checked at dog wellness visits?

During your pet's annual wellness exam, your vet will discuss any concerns that you may have as well as discuss any preventive care that may be needed. These wellness exams are covered by your pet's wellness plans at our hospital helping to allow you to continue routine care without worrying about the cost.

In some instances, we will have asked you to bring in a sample of your pet's stool in order to do a fecal exam. Your vet will use this sample to test for any intestinal parasites that may be causing harm to your pet.

After these initial steps, your veterinarian will perform a physical checkup of your dog which will usually include any or all of the following:

  • Listening to your pet's heart and lungs
  • Checking your animal's weight, stance, and gait
  • Checking your dog's eyes for signs of redness, cloudiness, eyelid issues, excessive tearing, or discharge
  • Inspecting the pet's coat for overall condition, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss
  • Looking at your pet's feet and nails for damage or signs of more serious health concerns
  • Looking at your pet's ears for signs of bacterial infection, ear mites, wax build-up, or polyps
  • Examining the condition of your pet's teeth for any indications of periodontal disease, damage or decay
  • Examining your pup for a range of issues from dryness to parasites to lumps and bumps (particularly in skin folds)
  • Palpate your pet's abdomen to access whether the internal organs appear to be normal and to check for signs of discomfort
  • Feeling along your pet's body (palpating) for any signs of illness such as swelling, evidence of lameness such as limited range of motion, and signs of pain

Our dogs are unable to appropriately express how they are feeling or if anything is wrong so these routine checkups will help determine if there is anything that you should be concerned about.

Will my dog get their shots during their checkup?

Vaccines are necessary in order to prevent a variety of illnesses and diseases that could cause harm to your pet. The vaccines that your dog will require will depend on the breed and the lifestyle of your dog.

Core vaccines for dogs are recommended for all pets, whereas lifestyle vaccines are most often recommended for pets that are regularly in contact with other animals. Speak to your vet to learn more about the vaccines recommended for your dog.

These vaccines will need to be administered every one to three years in the form of booster shots. Wellness plans typically cover these booster shots that your vet can help plan a schedule for according to your dogs specific needs.

Does my dog really need parasite prevention?

Parasites are a real health threat to South Plainfield dogs. Ticks and mosquitos are known to carry parasites that can infect your pet and cause a variety of health issues and even be potentially fatal. These parasites could also potentially infect the humans of your home which is why parasite prevention is so important. It's also important to know that some of these parasites can be passed from pets to their loving owners!

Parasite prevention can help to protect your pet from conditions such as:

  • Heartworm
  • Fleas
  • Lyme Disease
  • Anaplasmosis
  • Babesiosis
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Hookworms
  • Roundworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Whipworm

Is preventive care expensive?

Compared to treating advanced forms of conditions, disorders or diseases, (especially heartworm) regularly scheduled wellness exams combined with preventive care can save you money.

Not only that, but they will make sure your pet experiences a minimal amount of discomfort or pain from any health issues they are experiencing. The sooner a medical issue is detected, the sooner it can be diagnosed and treated.

Another great option to help cover the costs associated with routine care is pet wellness plans. Our South Plainfield animal hospital offers wellness plans for all sizes of dogs.
