The Importance of Pet Checkup

Wellness exams are key to ensuring  your pet stays in good physical health long-term.

With routine vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, the exams include routine checkups in order to provide your pet with the best opportunity to achieve excellent lifelong health.

We can help you prevent health issues from developing in your pet, or catch any problems early (when they are most treatable) when you bring your cat or dog in for their routine checkup.

Pet Checkup in South Plainfield

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

Your South Plainfield veterinarian will give your cat or dog a comprehensive physical vet examination in order to get a full overview of their overall health. Regular wellness exams at Plainfield Animal Hospital include the following components:

General Condition

Your cat or dog's general condition can give hints to their overall health. Their level of alertness how they walk or stand, and if they are at a healthy level of weight for their size are key indicators of your pet's wellbeing.

Skin & Coat

During your animal's exam, we look at your dog or cat's skin and coat for signals of issues. We check for things like lumps, bumps, excessive oiliness or dryness, abnormal hair loss or shedding and dandruff.

Face & Head

Your pet's nose, eyes and ears will be checked for signs of discharge or abnormalities. We also examine their mouth for symptoms of oral health issues like periodontal disease and plaque build up.

Internal Health

The pulse, rhythm, blood pressure and rate of your pet's heart are crucial to their health. We will examine all these conditions to make sure everything about your companions heart is normal. We also check the lungs for abnormal breathing.

Lymph nodes are also checked for any signs of swelling or pain. We then look at the abdomen to make sure the kidneys, bladder, intestines, liver, stomach and spleen feel alright, and that your pet is not displaying any hints of discomfort.

Review of Findings

When your pet's wellness exam has been completed, the vet will go over any concerns they might have in regards to your pet's health. They will take the time to discuss any nutritional requirements your cat or dog may need.

Puppy & Kitten Checkups

Kittens and puppies require a proper level of medical attention in their first several weeks to get a healthy start at life.

We will provide your new furry companion a full physical exam, deworming medications and the appropriate immunizations. We will also look for intestinal parasites.  We give you a kitten or puppy 'kit' containing samples and educational materials to help you provide the newest member of your family the care they need.

Never pause when you feel the need to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have regarding the care of your new pet.

When your kitten or puppy's checkup is done, come back regularly for their mandatory booster shots

Seniors

Because of the new advancements in pet therapies, veterinary care, medical knowledge and better nutrition options available, senior pets are living longer than ever before.

This is great news for owners and their pets! However, this means those owners need to give greater attention to their pet's healthcare routine as they age. As your pet passes their middle age years, routine exams become more important to their health and longevity.

On top of the routine wellness procedures our vets give to every senior pet, we will provide your older companion with special attention regarding their possible geriatric conditions, including decreased vision and arthritis.

We may recommend extra laboratory tests for aging pets to obtain additional information about your senior pet's wellbeing and health.

Vaccinations & Prevention

Throughout your pet's checkup at our South Plainfield animal hospital, the vet will see if your cat or dog needs preventive care, or if  it is time for routine vaccinations.
